After a strong 6.4 magnitude earthquake people are spending a sleepless night as a
series of aftershocks shook Assam.A total of 11 quakes jolted the state since
Wednesday night and all of them originated in and around Sonitpur, whose
headquarters Tezpur which was rocked first by the strong temblor at 7.51 am on
Wednesday. The strongest one was at 1.20 am 0f 4.6 magnitude, forcing the people
to run out of their homes in panic.The other tremors were 2.8, 2.6, 2.9, 2.3, 2.7, 2.7,
2.8, 3.6, 3.3 and 2.8 magnitudes and shook the state at 9.38 pm, 0:24 am, 1:10 am,
1:41 am, 1:52 am, 2:38 am, 7:13 am, 1:04 pm, 4:17 pm and 7:14 pm respectively, NCS
said.No casualties have been reported..The area is seismically very active and falls in
the highest seismic hazard zone V, associated with collisional tectonics where the
Indian plate subducts beneath the Eurasian plate.
