Rohan Bopanna & Sania Mirza
Anil Dhupar, secretary general of the American Tennis Association (AITA), on Monday denounced "inappropriate and misleading" comments from tennis players Rohan Bopana and Sania Mirza.Bopanna explained that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) never nominated him and Sumita Naga and no changes were allowed except in cases of injury or illness after the nomination deadline.Sania later said that the team sacrificed a very good mixed doubles medal at the Tokyo Olympics if what Bopanna said was true.
AITA said in a statement that Boppana did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics due to ITF rules."Twitter comments by Rohan Bopanna and then Sania Mirza are inappropriate, misleading and it appears, without knowledge of the rules. They should have checked the rule book of ITF regarding qualifications, something that Divij Sharan seems to have done while writing to TOPS," AITA stated in a statement."Rohan Bopana cannot qualify under ITF rules. So Sani Mirza's tweets are unfounded and come from a player of his size. In fact, India's best run for Rohan Bopanna and Wild Carp was the right decision."However, they are not eligible to compete under the ITF rules.
The rating of our players was insufficient for direct qualification, and we tried to score goals. Rohan and Divy finished fifth on the July 16 alternate list.Only on 16th July, when Sumit Nagal got a chance in Singles, we saw a possibility, since singles players were also being considered, of Sumit being able to partner with Rohan. We asked ITF whether the entry of Sumit Nagal will suffice to pair with Rohan Bopanna for an entry into Men's Doubles," it also said.AITA mentioned ITF informed them by stating that "this cannot be done at this stage because of various reasons and rules". "Even if it is done, the pair would still not qualify. Rohan with Sumit would be at third alternate pair.
We at AITA tried to help our players with all combinations but they failed to make the cut based on rankings," AITA mentioned.Did Rohan Bopana think a month ago that Sumit should put his name on Sumit Nagala when he was 140 and Divija was 78? Without understanding the facts, the ITF defines what is unfair and totally misleading. " Even Sani Mirza's comments were the most inappropriate. Rohan's dividend or Sumita Nagala is not enough to qualify. So how do you miss your chance to win a medal in men's doubles or mixed doubles? This tweet and the testimony of Mr. Bopanna are clearly condemned. "In the men's singles, Naga tied for a place at the Tokyo Olympics. The 23-year-old is currently ranked 154th in the ATP rankings.
He finished 122nd in career rankings on 24 August 2020 after reaching Prague (CZE Challenger QF). Saniya Mirza and Ankita Raina have confirmed they will represent India in the women's Olympic doubles after their nominations were officially announced in July. Sanya will be the first athlete to represent India at the four Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo on July 23rd, and Ankita Reina will make her debut at the event.
