At least 100 dead and injured in attack in Afghanistan: Taliban officials
A Taliban police officer said at least 100 people were killed and surrounded in a mass explosion against Chit Muslims in northern Afghanistan. Most Mohammand Obaida say that "the majority of them have been murdered".
The explosion in Kunduz province was not immediately alleged. but militant Lami state fighters have a long history of attacking the Shitti Muslim minority in Afghanistan.
If confirmed, Friday's death toll would be the highest in a militant attack since US and NATO forces left Afghanistan and the Taliban took control of the country in late August.
Witnesses and a Taliban spokesman said several people were killed in a mass explosion at a mosque in northern Afghanistan visited by a religious minority on Friday.
The explosion took place at a Shitte mosque in Kunduz province during weekly Friday prayers at Gozar-e-Sayed-Abad Mosque, where members of the Shitte religious minority usually attend religious services in large numbers. Witness Ali Reza said he was praying at the time of the explosion and saw many victims.
Videos and photos on social media and elsewhere show people searching the ruined mosque and recovering the body of a believer in the mosque. horrific scene at an ambulance.
Taliban chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Shia mosque was attacked and many worshipers were killed and injured. He said Taliban special forces were on hand to investigate the incident.
The cause of the explosion was initially unclear. No group has taken responsibility for it. The Taliban leadership faces a growing threat from the local Islamic State known as Islamic State of Khorasan. IS fighters have stepped up attacks on drivers, including two deadly bombings in Kabul.
