Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies
On Monday, Alphonso Davies, a Canadian defender for Bayern Munich, tweeted a letter of solidarity to the Refugee Paralympic Team, praising them as the "world's most brave sports team" ahead of the Paralympic Games, which begin on Tuesday in Tokyo.
Davies was born in a refugee camp in Ghana to Liberian parents and spent five years there before migrating to Canada. He joined Bayern in 2018 and was a vital member of the Champions League-winning team in 2020.
Davies has since become a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees goodwill ambassador, and the 20-year-old said he knew what others who were forced to escape for their own safety or who suffered persecution went through.
“Know that you are not alone as you plunge into the water, ready to throw, and stride into the arena. On Twitter, Davies commented, "The world is behind you, including 82 million displaced people, 12 million of whom live with a disability."
“I've read your stories and learned about the experiences you've all had. Right now, you are the most brave sports team on the planet.
“Many people don't realise how difficult it is to be a refugee, forced to escape for your safety, how difficult it is to be displaced in the thick of a pandemic, how difficult it is to be alone hundreds of miles from your family when you need them the most. It's even more difficult when you have a disability.”
Davies went on to say that the athletes' accomplishments at the Games, which run from August 24 to September 5, will make them "role models" for those who want to participate in the sport.
“Make no mistake, what you're about to undertake in Tokyo will transform people's lives,” Davies stated emphatically.
“There will be refugees who believe they can succeed after seeing you succeed. And guess what? Those are the next generation of nurses, teachers, and scientists. That is transformation, and it begins with sport.”
