Bengaluru Schools and Colleges Shut on Nov 19 for Karnataka Rains

Schools and anganwadis will remain closed on Friday, November 19, for the upcoming heavy shower. Bengaluru Urban Commissioner J Manjunath sanctions a holiday for children up to Class 10, as well as anganwadis. The state Education Department had given the autonomy to the districts to decide on their school holidays by calculating the weather forecasts and rainfall situation.

A circular issued by the Department of Public Instruction attributes the heavy rain and subsequent difficulty in reaching schools in such a weather turmoil. The instruction declares a holiday, subject to the condition of holding another class to make up for the academic loss.

Authorisation has been sanctioned by R Vishal, Commissioner of the Department of Public Instruction to the districts for checking their local conditions and deciding on a holiday. Meanwhile, the instructions also assign this holiday to be compensated with remedial classes.

The districts of Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramnagar, Tumakuru, Chamarajanagar have announced a holiday already.

The met department had issued an orange warning, indicating preparations  for very heavy rainfall, for Bengaluru on November 19 and 20. A few districts in the northern interior region of the state, like Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag and Haveri have also received a yellow warning for Thursday and Friday..

The depression created over north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh entails more rain and thunderstorms over the southern and coastal districts of Karnataka for the upcoming two days. Heavy rains can also shower isolated for the four days incoming.

The Indian Express, remarks Bengaluru to have experienced the wettest November in  the last six years. 115.8 mm of showers were recorded between November 1 to 18, twice the average recorded the met. In November 2020, Bengaluru experienced only 71 mm of rainfall.
