International Dog Day 2021
Nobody knows how to melt hearts like man's best friend, and every year on August 26th, International Dog Day is celebrated to honour this bond between man and dog. Dogs help us humans in a variety of ways, from keeping us safe when working with emergency services to supporting the blind, deaf, and disabled. On this special day, take some time to recognise the love and value that dogs provide to our lives, and to aid abandoned and neglected dogs. When a person buys an exotic dog from a breeder or a pet store, the dogs in shelters and on the streets lose their chance to find a loving home.
Many Indian breeds are intelligent, gregarious, and loyal in the same way that their international counterparts are.Unfortunately, despite being much better adapted to the Indian environment, the fervour for western canine breeds is jeopardising many of these magnificent desi species. So, without further ado, here are a few Indian dog breeds that make wonderful companions and are excellent choices for any dog owner.Indian Spitz, the most popular Indian dog breed in the 1980s and 1990s, are excellent family dogs and are well-suited to today's suburban lifestyle due to their compact to medium size. They're extremely friendly, adorable, lively, and smart. Furthermore, their laid-back demeanour is great for new pet owners.
Because they live in the western Himalayas, as well as sections of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Himachali hound dogs, also known as Gaddi Kutta or mastiffs, are large and fluffy. Despite their beginnings as hunting dogs, local shepherds now routinely use them. The hefty physique, thick fur, and bulk of this breed enable it to not only tolerate difficult climate conditions, but also to fend off attacks from local wild animals.
The Indian Pariah Dog is the most basic indigenous dog breed in the subcontinent. They have a long lifespan, are less prone to sickness, and require little maintenance. To keep up with their active personalities, they do require regular walks and exercise. Although they do not usually get along with other dogs or pets, they are devoted, protective, gregarious, and social.
Combais, who originated in the steep peaks of the Western Ghats, are known for their endurance and dedication. Combai dogs are unusually brilliant, smart, and robust, and, like Rajapalayam and other odd breeds, they are on the risk of extinction due to a lack of information and need for domestication. This tan-colored dog breed is known for being active, fierce, and social, which makes it a good protection dog.
The royal Rajapalayam breed is said to have originated in Tamil Nadu, in South India, and is named after the city of Virudhunagar in the Rajapalayam region of the state. It was used to defend palaces and even fight battles in the past. These slender, muscular dogs with a thin white coat have been documented in history as having been trained to fight alongside warriors in the Polygar and Carnatic wars. Polygar hounds is the name given to them as a result of this.
This Uttarakhand dog breed is aggressive and robust, and it is considered one of India's most important house guardians. This breed, which was once used to guard and defend the cattle of communities in Kumaon's rugged highlands, is now endangered, with just a few hundred left. Kumaon Mastiffs are powerful dogs with a short, silky coat and a robust neck, similar to antique Great Danes.
Raising mongrels and strays is considerably easier than keeping an exotic pet at home because of their strong immune systems and capacity to adapt to Indian surroundings. Strays are intelligent and aware of their environment, so training them to guard your home is not difficult. Strays are born into a competitive, dangerous, and difficult environment and nevertheless manage to survive, demonstrating their flexibility.
