Election Commission

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for by-elections in different states on Thursday. By-elections for six casual vacancies in the Council of States will commence on October 4, according to the ECI. Voting will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with vote counting starting at 5 p.m. on the same day.

West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, all of which have six casual vacancies, are going to the polls. The AIADMK's KP Munuswamy and Vaithiyalingam resigned as members of the State Assembly, leaving two vacancies in Tamil Nadu. Each of the other states contains a single vacancy.

West Bengal is having elections for the Rajya Sabha seat that Manas Ranjan Bhunia left vacant. In May, the leader resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP. By-polls are being held in Maharashtra for the seat of Rajeev Shankarrao Satav, who died on May 16 after acquiring COVID-19. The seat of Thaawarchand Gehlot, who resigned and took office as the 19th Governor of Karnataka in July, is up for election in Madhya Pradesh. Elections are being conducted in Assam for the seat of Biswajit Daimary.

Candidates must submit their nominations by September 22 at the latest, according to the EC notification. The nominations will be examined on September 23, after which applicants will have until September 27 to withdraw their nominations. The election will take place on October 4th. According to the Election Commission, all six council elections will be completed by October 6.

Apart from these, by-polls are scheduled for September 30 in the vital seat of Bhabanipur. Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister, is running for re-election after losing her seat in the West Bengal Assembly Elections to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram.
