On Tuesday, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims) in New Delhi will begin screening children aged 6 to 12 years for Bharat Biotech's Covaxin clinical trials. “The selection process for the clinical trial of Covaxin among children in the age group of 6-12 years will begin from Tuesday,” Dr. Sanjay Rai, professor at the Centre for Community Medicine at Aiims Delhi, told news agency PTI on Monday.

 The selection process for clinical trials in children aged 12 to 18 years is now complete, and children in this age range have received a single dosage of the vaccine. Aiims New Delhi will commence trials for children aged 2 to 6 years after the recruitment of children aged 6 to 12 years is completed.

Director of Aiims Patna Dr. Prabhat Kumar Singh, last week said by adding 54 children had already done with registered for the trials of which 16 falls in the category from 12-18 years age group.“After these trials, the age group will be 6-12 years and then 2-6 years but now we have started trials in the age group of 12-18 years".

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) gave clearance on May 12 to undertake the second and third phases of a Covaxin clinical study among children aged 2 to 18. According to PTI, the experiment would be done in three sections, with 175 participants in each age range of 12-18 years, 6-12 years, and 2-6 years.

On day 0 and day 28, the vaccination will be delivered intramuscularly in two doses. According to PTI, the experiment would evaluate the vaccine's safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity in children.
