Congress president Oscar Fernandes
Congress chairman Oscar Fernandes, union representative of party chairman Sonia Gandhi, died on September 13 at the age of 80.
The former Union minister and convention veteran sought treatment at Yenepoya Hospital in Mangaluru after sustaining a head injury while doing yoga at home. He also had to undergo surgery to remove a clot from his brain.
Fernandes was Minister of Transport, Roads and Highways in the Congress government led by Manmohan Singh. During the same period, he also received a subsidy from the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
Oscar Fernandes, a five-time member of the Lok Sabha and four-time member of the Rajya Sabha, remained an MP until his death, except for 15 days in 1998.
Fernandes, a famous dancer from Kuchipudi, was also a seasoned politician, known for successfully negotiating difficult negotiations with rebels and party workers. In addition to serving as Congress President of the Central Election Authority, he has also served as Secretary General of the Indian Congress Committee (AICC).
