NEW DELHI: The sudden increase in Covid-19 infections in Kerala following Onam pushed India's cases to an eight-week high in the week ending Sunday, with the southern state alone accounting for 66 percent of all cases in the country during this time. In the week of August 23-29, India registered more than 2.9 lakh new Covid cases, a 32 percent increase over the previous seven days. Since the week of June 28-July 4, when 3.05 lakh cases were documented, this was the greatest number of weekly infections.
Over 1.9 lakh instances were reported in Kerala alone, up 55 percent from the previous week's total of 1.25 lakh. Since May 16-23, the state has had the largest number of infections in 14 weeks, and any Indian state has had the highest number in 13 weeks.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, no single state has accounted for more than two-thirds of all Covid cases in a single week. Kerala appears to be in a league of its own right now, as none of the state's neighbours — Karnataka and Tamil Nadu — have recorded any major increases in population this week.
Maharashtra is the only other significant state where weekly Covid quantities appear to have increased, with a minor increase of less than 1%.
Meanwhile, Kerala, after Maharashtra, became the second state in the country to register more than 40 lakh Covid cases. Kerala reached a dreadful milestone on Sunday, when 29,836 new cases were registered. The overall number of cases in Maharashtra exceeds 64.5 lakh.
During the week, India had a 10.5 percent increase in deaths. There were 3,439 fatalities in the week, compared to 3,111 the week before.
Meanwhile, India has recorded more than 40,000 daily cases for the fifth day in a row, with a total of 43,399 on Sunday (with Jharkhand figures yet to arrive). On the same day, 373 people died, bringing the total number of active cases to about 3.8 lakh. Kerala had more than 2.1 lakh of them.
