Hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first bilateral talks with Joe Biden, agricultural chief Rakesh Tikait urged the US president to focus on the controversial agricultural laws the center passed during his meeting with the prime minister. At least 700 farmers have died in protests in the past 11 months and "these black laws must be repealed to save us," the farmer's leader tweeted to the US leader to draw international attention to the events.
Mr. Tikait is the spokesman for the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), one of the farmers' unions that has called for the repeal of the three agricultural laws. Farmers fear that the three agricultural laws will abolish the minimum support price (MSP) system and leave it to the whims of big business.
Hundreds of farmers led by Samyukta Kisan Morcha have been camping on Delhi's borders since November 2020 to demand the repeal of the three laws. Instead, farmers want a new law that guarantees a minimum subsidy price (MSP) for plants.
However, the government, which held 11 rounds of formal dialogues with the protesters, insisted the laws were good for farmers and offered to change them.
Earlier this year, protests caught the world's attention when US singer Rihanna, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Meena Harris, US lawyer and niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris, actress Amanda Cerni , singers Jay Sean, Dr. Zeus and former adult star Mia Khalif tweeted about it.
Prime Minister Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House this evening. This will be the first face-to-face meeting of the two heads of state or government after Biden assumed the presidency of the United States on January 20.
