The use of drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose in a supplement for severe COVID-19 patients in the case of emergency have been approved by the Drug Controller General of India.
On Saturday DRDO said in an official statement that “Clinical trial results have shown that this molecule helps in faster recovery of hospitalized patients and reduces supplemental oxygen dependence. Being a generic molecule and analogue of glucose, it can be easily produced and made available in plenty. A higher proportion of patients treated with 2-DG showed RT-PCR negative conversion in COVID-19 patients”.
In collaboration with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Applied Sciences(INMAS) which is a lab of Defence Research and Development Organization(DRDO) has developed this drug.
An experiment was conducted by the INMAS-DRDO scientists in their laboratory in April 2020, during the first wave Covid-19,with the help of CEntre of Cellular and Molecular Biology(CCMB), and searched the molecules inhibits the growth of SARS-CoV-2 virus and works against the virus very effectively.
Based on the result of the research the drug 2-DG has been permitted for the phase-II trial in May 2020.
