The ultra-conservative Iranian Ebrahim Raisi is a strong and devout figure and a defender of corruption of the poor. The 60-year-old was proclaimed victor of the presidential election of the Islamic Republic Saturday in August, which was to take over moderate Hassan Rouhani.

Critics claim that he was skewed in his favour because strong contenders were discredited, yet he is Iran's greatest chance for resistance to the West and alleviation from a grave economic crisis for his devoted followers.

Raise is not known for his tremendous charm but has led a popular effort as head of the judiciary to punish corrupt officials...

In the campaign, he pledged to continue the struggle, create 4 million new houses for those with low income and develop "a people's government for strong Iran." Several Iranian media sources view Ayatollah Ali Khameenei, who turns 82, next month, as a potential successor.

Raisi is the one with the name "hoyatoleslam" – the black turban of which means that he comes directly from Prophet Muhammad of Islam – one rank below the position of ayatollah in the Shiite religious system.

Like the other ultra-conservatives, he criticized Rouhani's party fiercely, when US President Donald Trump sabotaged the 2015 nuclear deal.
