Farm laws repel the farmers, how the farmers fought back the battle against the three laws.
The upcoming assembly elections are the only way to know whether the Modi government was able to get the trust back of the farmers. The Modi government took up the decision to repeal the three farm laws, these three farm laws went along with a yearlong agitation. Repeal of the three agricultural laws comes just before the Punjab elections. The decision to repeal the three agricultural laws has been a leading historic victory for the (SKM) Samyukta Kisan Morcha, which is the umbrella body of the farmers. The battle began against the Modi government back in June 2020. On the 19th of November 2021, PM Modi took the decision to repeal the three farm laws. The SKM went on to issue a statement that said that they will wait for the announcement which is going to take effect on the parliamentary procedures. What the major causes and the reasons are for repelling the three agricultural laws. The main reason behind the winning of this year-long battle is unity and also the mass support behind the protest. The leadership that kept the movement ongoing is the main reason behind the winning of the battle against the government. Around 700 farmers have lost their lives during this struggle. Even the suicide of the farmers took place as Sant Baba Ram Singh had shot himself showing support towards the protesting farmers.
The leadership among the farmers and the unity are said to be some of the actual reasons behind the success of the farmers. In June 2020, the Modi government went on to pass the ordinances that served as the laws. Then on hearing those, 32 farmers decided to come together for a cause and form an organization to oppose the three farm laws. The leaders of these organizations were divided among themselves for several years but got united and decided to join hands to fight against the agitation.
The leadership of SKM had come into its own and went to reach Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur on the 26th of November 2020, which were the Centres for the protest. After a month of protest, SKM was also supported by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, which is an organization of the landless laborers of Punjab. This addition gave a big support to the protest. During the agitation and the protest, the Modi government provided the food but the protesting farmers refused to take the food and bought their own food. The protesting farmers did not leave the protesting sites and even chose to live on the site. Many singers, artists, advocates, leaders, religious leaders stood up with the protesting farmers.
The videos of the protests were also shared on the social media sites of the SKM. The meetings were conducted by the different union leaders and that later the leader of the union would address the press. This strategy and the organization among the leaders showed a strong defense of the farmers.
After the protest a movement reached Delhi to take up a different turn and also received a huge amount of support from all over the country. The NRIs have also extended support in the protest. The maximum amount of support came from Haryana and even the state joined the agitation with full force. The villagers of Haryana had also supported the protesting farmers with food grains and the unlimited supply of milk. The “Langar '', was seen in the protesting site, many protesting farmers decided to stay at the protesting site lined up in tents while the others decided to live in nearby hotels. Even the slogan “no farmers no food”, and that became an international slogan for the protesting farmers; these slogans were seen in the rallies which were conducted by the NRI’s of the US, Australia, and Canada.
The protestors were also supported by celebrities globally and nationally. Many Punjabi artists including Bollywood stars and sports persons came up to support the protesting farmers. The movement was also supported by the global leaders and the Canadian Prime minister. Also, the non-political leaders of the USA, UK, and Australia also showed their support toward the protesting farmers.
The agitation also took a negative way, even a group of volunteers were appointed to watch out to keep away and suspected troublemakers who tried to enter the protesting camps. Even the announcements were made regarding the patience and the calm among the youths. The violence of the republic day was seen where some of the protesting farmers were seen allegedly attacking the police personnel. Even there were no such reports of agitating violence in the past year.
The protest shook the nation, as not only the farmers but the family including the women and the children were seen sitting on the Singhu borders even in extreme cold, heat, rain which proved the “life- and-death struggle”.
