RCB opening batsmen Devdutt Padikkal
Devdutt Padikkal, first player of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), recalled his recent experience in India. The left-handed opener, currently in the United Arab Emirates ahead of the 2021 IPL second leg, made his T20I debut for India in July while touring Sri Lanka. In a video recently shared by RCB on social media, the 21-year-old shared his feelings when he received the Indian shirt.
“It (the Indian jersey) was given to us in the room when we were in quarantine. For 4-5 hours I was just wearing that jersey as soon as I got it. I was just clicking pictures and sending it to my parents and friends. I was just very excited as soon as I got it,” Padikkal said in the video.
Because he played for India at such a young age, he was the first Indian player born after 2000 to be called up to India. The star player also recalled an incident from his childhood where he refused to wear the fake Indian hat his parents brought from the store.
“I still remember once that my parents brought me an Indian cap from the stores. They gave it to me but I refused to wear it. I won’t wear it until I get the actual one.”
Padikkal also made it clear that it was his coach Nasir who first sent him the screenshot of the team that bears his name. The RCB player said he did not take the time to call him, which was followed with good wishes from all sides. Padikkal has been training with him since he was 11 years old.
The 21-year-old made headlines in his first IPL season and became one of the RCB's top scorers. During the IPL 2020 he played 15 games for the Red Brigades, collected 473 points and came back with 31.53 points.
This IPL season, Padikkal accumulated 195 points in the six games he played in the first leg and returned with a 39.
