Serie A faces a revenue gap from international markets
As talks over TV rights languish, a streaming arrangement serves as a "back-up" solution. Serie A faces a revenue gap from international markets.
Clubs may rethink their relationship with private equity firms. As Italy's top-flight soccer league faces an impasse over the sale of TV rights in the region, Serie A teams agreed on Friday to create their own Arabic-language channel on YouTube to live-stream some matches in the Middle East and North Africa.
Serie A, which includes Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter, has been seeking for months to break a deadlock over the sale of rights to broadcast its matches for the next three seasons in a market that includes areas such as the United States and Canada.
However, Qatari broadcaster beIn has been hesitant to participate in the bidding process, while talks with media conglomerate Saudi Sports Company over a broadcasting arrangement have proven unsuccessful, according to insiders, leaving an agreement ahead of the season's start on August 21.
Following a teleconference meeting, Serie A stated in a statement that it "has decided to proceed with the construction of an Arabic-language channel on the YouTube platform," confirming what sources told Reuters earlier on Friday.
Serie A earned 970 million euros ($1.14 billion) in adjusted revenue from the sale of international TV rights licenses over the previous three-year cycle. So far, the Italian league has obtained contracts worth approximately 640 million dollars for the screening of live matches abroad from 2021 to 2024.
The prospect of a revenue shortfall as a result of the Middle East market deadlock comes at a time when many teams are in desperate need of new resources to deal with the pandemic's aftermath.
