An army officer and four other soldiers were killed on Monday in a clash between security forces and terrorists in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. Sources said there was a fierce shooting in the Surrankote area a few days ago, with at least four to five heavily armed terrorists crossing the country. The counterinsurgency operation was launched in the early hours of the morning in a village near Dera Ki Gali, after intelligence reports signaled their presence.
Hidden terrorists fired at the searches, resulting in a violent shootout and fatal injuries to a non-commissioned officer or JCO and four other soldiers. They died of their injuries. The meeting with the terrorists is ongoing and further details remain to be seen, a defense spokesperson said.Officials said there had been reports of a group of heavily armed terrorists in Chamrer Forest after escaping the line of control days ago.
Reinforcements have been sent to the area to block all escape routes for terrorists, they said. The incident comes amid increased terrorist activity in the Kashmir Valley in recent weeks and the resumption of ceasefire violations along the line of control with Pakistan. Last week, security forces on EU territory arrested more than 900 people in response to the killing of seven civilians.
