On Friday, The Defence Ministry cleared a project of ₹43,000 crores for the construction of six advanced submarines in the nation under a "Strategic Partnership" (SP) model from the state government to strengthen the level of submarine forces in the Indian Navy and counter the rapid expansion of China's submarine floods.
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), India's top procurement authority, bought into the idea at a Saturday meeting, and the Navy would soon issue Proposal Requests for the programme, known as P-75 India, according to the officials. According to one of the officials, this will be the first RFP issued under the SP model, which aims to boost the government's "Make in India initiative."
The approach envisions an Indian strategic partner collaborating with a foreign original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to set up production facilities in the nation to build significant defence platforms. Air independent propulsion (AIP) systems will be installed aboard the new submarines, allowing them to stay below for longer periods of time and improving their fighting capabilities.
