With Kamala Harris visiting Guatemala and Mexico on her first new excursion as VP, the Biden administration is depended upon to proclaim new measures to fight smuggling and dealing and hopes to report additional foe of debasement efforts as well on Monday, a senior administration official said.
The official, who advised reporters going with Harris on Sunday, spoke in a state of secrecy to survey announcements before they have been disclosed. No further details were given.
Harris has been tasked by President Joe Biden with addressing the basic drivers of the spike in migration to the U.S.- Mexico line, and her aides say debasement will be a central focus of her meetings with the Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei on Monday and Mexico's Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday.
"Corruption really does sap the wealth of any country, and in Central America is at a scale where it is a large percentage of GDP across the region," said special envoy Ricardo Zuniga.
"We see corruption as one of the most important root causes to be dealt with," Zuniga added.
The excursion got off to an unpleasant start when Harris' plane returned to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland around 30 minutes after takeoff because of what her spokesperson said was an issue with the arrival gear. She pulled out on another plane and landed late Sunday around there, where she was met by Foreign Minister Pedro Brolo.
