Kangana Ranaut & Javed Akhtar
The Bombay High Court today dismissed Kangana Ranaut's plea for the quashing of a criminal defamation suit filed against her by a Mumbai court based on lyricist Javed Akhtar's complaint.Justice Revati Mohite Dere, who had reserved her decision on the plea on September 1, said the applicant's (Kangana Ranaut's) petition "stands dismissed.
"Ms Ranaut had challenged the defamation proceedings initiated by the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate's court earlier this year through her advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, claiming that the court had failed to apply its mind to the issue. Mr Akhtar's advocate, Jay Bharadwaj, told the high court that the magistrate ordered a police investigation after reading the lyricist's complaint and passages from Kangana Ranaut's interview in which she supposedly made the defamatory remarks.
In November of last year, Javed Akhtar filed a criminal complaint against Kangana Ranaut with the Andheri metropolitan magistrate, claiming that she made defamatory and inaccurate remarks about him in a television interview with journalist Arnab Goswami. The court ordered the Juhu police to investigate Javed Akhtar's complaint against Kangana Ranaut in December 2020, and then began criminal proceedings against her in February this year, issuing summons to her.
