Kanhaiya Kumar, Head of IPC, and Gujarat MP Jignesh Mewani join Congress
Former Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Kanhaiya Kumar visited the party's headquarters in the capital on Tuesday in the presence of Rahul Gandhi.
Gujarat MP Jignesh Mevani also supported the Congress ideology but did not officially join the party.
An optimistic congress has said Kanhaiya Kumar is a symbol of the fight for freedom of expression in the country. "His joining the Congress will enthuse our workers," said senior leader and party general secretary KC Venugopal.
"I am joining the Congress because I strongly feel that if the country has to be saved, the Congress will have to survive," Kanhaiya said.
"Congress party is like a large ship. If it survives, all other smaller parties will also survive," Kanhaiya said.
With Kanhaiya Kumar on board, Congress hopes to improve his performance in Bihar, where he has been a fringe player for some time.
Kanhaiya, who rose to fame as the chairman of the JNU Students' Union, joined the CPI ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls against Giriraj Singh of BJP Begusarai in Bihar.
Independent Gujarat MP Jignesh Mevani was another young leader who took the podium in Congress today.
"I am joining the Congress ideology today. I haven't formally joined the party due to technical issues as I am an independent MLA," Mevani said.
Jignesh Mevani said the country is passing through an unprecedented crisis under the present BJP government. "An atmosphere of hatred is being spread across the country," Mevani said.
"Today, I am part of the Congress ideologically, because it is an ideology that can save the country," he said.
"I will fight the upcoming Gujarat polls from Congress symbol," Mewani added.
Venugopal praised Jignesh Mevani for his vigorous campaign against the BJP and its policies in Gujarat.
Mevani is likely to play a key role in Gujarat's congress in next year's general election.
Mevani is the organizer of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM). In the 2017 parliamentary elections in Gujarat, Congress failed to run its candidate against Mevani in Vadgam constituency.
His partnership with Congress comes about when he courted the caste community following the election of Punjab's chief Dalit Prime Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi.
The arrival of these two young leaders on the Congressional podium comes amid a wave of partisan denunciations in recent months.
While former Mahila Congress Chairman Sushmita Dev left the party to attend the Trinamool Congress, former Union Minister Jitin Prasada is now a member of the BJP and Minister of Yogi Adityanath.
Luizinho Faleiro, the Goa congresswoman, left the party on Monday and is expected to attend the Trinamool Congress.
