Thousands of Indian farmers started their “Kisan Mahapanchayat” on Sunday on the GIC site in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), who leads the movement, farmers from at least 15 states will visit Mahapanchayat on Sunday.
“These meetings will be held across the country. We have to stop the country from getting sold. Farmers should be saved, the country should be saved; business, employees and youth should be saved — this is the aim of the rally,” Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said.
It has been more than nine months since farmers protested three new laws passed by Parliament last September on the agricultural sector. They brave the winter cold, the summer heat, the rain and the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
SKM, the umbrella organization of 40 farmers' unions, said the "Kisan Mahapanchayat" proves that the unrest is borne by "all castes, religions, states, classes, petty traders and all segments of society".
In old times, when the fight was for honour and respect, this instrument [ransingha] was used. Today, q call has been given for war by all ‘kisan majdoor’unions against the BJP’s ‘corporate raj’,” it tweeted in Hindi.
Meanwhile, the Muzaffarnagar government rejected the request of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Jayant Chaudhry to throw flowers from a helicopter at the Mahapanchayat site and the participants. Magistrate Abhishek Singh rejected the request as it could not be admitted for security reasons.
As a precaution, district authorities have stationed police at the home of Union Minister Sanjiv Balyan and BJP MP Umesh Malik.SKM claimed on Saturday that thousands of farmers from 15 states had arrived in Muzaffarnagar to participate in the Mahapanchayat.
“The mahapanchayat on September 5 will make the Yogi-Modi governments realise the power of farmers, farm labourers and supporters of the farm movement. The Muzaffarnagar mahanchayat will be the biggest ever in the last nine months,” the SKM had said in a statement
He also said that hundred medical camps have been set up for the farmers participating in the mahapanchayat. Farmers protest against the three controversial laws have lasted more than nine months since arriving at the Delhi border. They have called for the repeal of laws that they fear will abolish the MSP system and leave them to the whims of the big corporations .
