Apart from that, he is also known to be a "sharp" fielder. Virat Kohli was the captain of India Under-19 and led the team to its victory at the Under-19 World Cup in 2008, Malaysia.

There onwards, he was appointed as the vice-captain of the ODI team in 2012, and as the captain in 2014 after Dhoni's test retirement. Gradually he became the limited-overs captain in 2017 after Dhoni stepped down. He was also appointed as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team in Indian premier league in 2013, which he continues to assume.
