Luizinho Faleiro traveled to Calcutta to join TMC
Former Goa Prime Minister and former State Congressman Luizinho Faleiro visited Calcutta on Tuesday, the day after his resignation as a senior Indian National Congress official and member of the Legislative Assembly of Goa. Faleiro is expected to attend the Trinamool convention on Wednesday. When Faleiro announced his resignation on Monday, he was silent on his future plans and said he "definitely supports the Mamata Congress".
“Definitely, I will support Mamata Congress because she has fought, she has succeeded... She symbolises women empowerment which can bring this country back on the rails of development and progress,” Faleiro said, declining to elaborate on his next steps.
On Tuesday, Faleiro left for Calcutta with some of his supporters, who also resigned from Congress along with Faleiro. His companions during his visit to Calcutta included former Goa Congress Secretary Yatish Naik Vijai Pai, Secretary Mariano Pinto, former MGP MP Lavoo Mamledar, civil rights activists Shivdas Naik and Rajendra Kakodkar and the President of the South Antonio Clovis da Costa. Association of Defenders of Goa et al.
He will be admitted to the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday in the presence of Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congressional Supremo (TMC), what his supporters call the "grand admission ceremony".
Congress, initially surprised by Faleiro's decision, met with known supporters of Faleiro. Goa official Dinesh Gundu Rao urged former Panaji mayor Surendra Furtado and former MP Agnelo Fernandes to meet with congress leaders in Delhi to avoid further desertions.
Congress also hosted former Congressman Avertano Furtado. Furtado, who was independently elected in 2012 with BJP support, said he was "still a member of Congress" when his father founded Faleiro decades earlier, but had to leave Congress because his path was blocked. . Now that the road is clear, it's back, the former lawmaker said.
According to people familiar with the case, Faleiro was angry with the congressional leadership for ignoring their protests against Girish Chodankar's retention as president of the state party. Faleiro hopes to lead the Congressional State Unit of Trinamool in the next state elections, a close leader said.
The ruling BJP, which is expected to benefit from the high-level change, hailed the start of "political tourism in Goa".
“We are promoting medical tourism, spiritual tourism, we are promoting hinterland tourism and (now) political tourism. I feel it has started in Goa. Elections are close. I welcome all kinds of tourism, so that all my Goan brothers and sisters have access to a new business in Goa. Tourist business should increase in Goa,” Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said on the sidelines of a function held on Monday.
Avertano Furtado, Faleiro's successor in Congress, lost to Faleiro in the 2017 general election.
Congress denied regret that Luizinho had to leave Faleiro's exit open to the party, saying Faleiro had opted for a "retirement package" given the weight of his country in his country. Congress said his departure was a "blessing in disguise" for the party.
