According to the state health department, Bihar has changed its attention to treating mucormycosis, often known as black fungus, after being successful in halting the spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19). The condition, which is often detected in people recovering from Covid-19, has surfaced as a new threat in the state, according to the report.

According to the state health department, 562 instances of mucormycosis have been registered in the state thus far, with 76 deaths and just 153 people treated. Last month, the state declared the post-Covid complicated to be an epidemic. According to news agency PTI, most black fungus patients are being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS).

102 patients with black fungus are being treated at AIIMS Patna, while 114 are being treated at IGIMS. Too far, AIIMS has accepted 148 patients with the condition, whereas IGIMS has accepted 187 patients.

A team of neurosurgeons successfully removed mucormycosis, or black fungus, from a 60-year-old patient's brain on Friday. It was somewhat bigger than a typical cricket ball.

"The patient, Anil Kumar, is a resident of Jammu, who was rushed here after he suffered fits several times. The surgery continued for three hours and nearly 100 ml of pus was also removed from the brain," IGIMS superintendent Dr. Manish Mandal told PTI.

He added, "Performing the surgery without causing any damage to the eyes was a big challenge. We take satisfaction in the fact that after the operation, the patient can see normally”.
