Mother tongue for Education: Southern states led by Karnataka, West Bengal on top
Learning in our mother tongue is way easier than learning through other languages. Every state in India provides education through English as well as their regional language. But most of the students are enrolled in English medium class while only a few learn through their mother tongue.
Among all the states in India, Karnataka has been in the top list where students gain knowledge in their mother tongue as reported by United District Information System For Education (UDISE). It stated that only 20% of students learn through English while the rest of 53.5% prefer to learn through Kannada.
After this UDISE report it is noted that the topmost place was occupied by West Bengal in the country. Only 5.3% of students learn through the English medium while the remaining 89.9% learn through their mother tongue. In Odisha, there are only 1.20% of the population speaking Bengali. It is reported that almost 80% of students learn through the Bengali medium. In Andhra Pradesh, students learn less in their mother tongue. Even in Tamil Nadu, students prefer to study through English medium than through their mother tongue.
So, in order to provide education in the mother tongue, most activists are fighting with the government to increase mother tongue languages in schools.
