Naomi Osaka has pulled out of Wimbledon 2021, saying she is "excited" to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.

In May Naomi Osaka, the Japanese tennis player withdrew from the French Open citing mental health and disclosing that after the 2018 U.S. Open, she suffered from extended periods of depression.

Naomi Osaka, the world No. 2 in women's tennis, has withdrawn from this year's Wimbledon to focus on the Tokyo Olympics.

According to Kyodo News where Osaka's agent quoted as saying via email, "Naomi won't be playing Wimbledon this year. She is taking some personal time with friends and family. She will be ready for the Olympics and is excited to play in front of her home fans,” quoted Osaka's agent as saying via email.

Osaka was penalized $15,000 for missing the press event following her triumph during the first round of the French Open, which she did not attend.

Though, World No. 4 Dominic Thiem has announced that he would not compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

On Twitter Thiem said, "Hi everybody, I have some sad news to share with you all. After talking with my team and analyzing the situation I have taken the very difficult decision to withdraw from competing in the Tokyo Olympics. For me, like all athletes, taking part in the Olympics and representing my country is a huge honor and that makes this decision even tougher. However, 2021 did not start as expected and I don't feel ready to play my best in Tokyo".

This year's Tokyo Olympics will begin on July 23 and will go through August 8. Last year's event was supposed to take place; however, it was postponed because of the COVID 19 Pandemic.
