At the end of the waiting year, one of the Kuthiran double tunnels on the Trissur-Palakkad national road in Kerala was opened to traffic. The tunnel was supposed to open on August 1, but Minister of Roads and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the opening via Twitter on Saturday.
"This is the first road tunnel in the State and will drastically improve connectivity to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The 1.6 km is designed through the Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary," he posted in a tweet.
There is no official opening. The first to enter the tunnel were the district collector Harita V. Kumar and the city police commissioner R. Aditya. Two-wheeled vehicles and then other vehicles can enter the tunnel. The hundreds of drivers who waited for hours in front of Kuthiran's front door breathed a sigh of relief. Kuthiran is an accident prone mountainous area on the Mannuthy-Wadakkancheri section of the Trissur-Palakkad motorway. Accidents on the route cause traffic jams.
The Supreme Court has interfered with this project on several occasions. This tunnel will significantly reduce travel time from Coimbatore to Kochi. Various departments, including fire and rescue services, have previously passed fitness tests.
