OnlyFans, a groundbreaking website that allows models and entertainers to charge fans for naked images, announced on Thursday that it would be phasing out "sexually explicit" content to placate the banks and financial transaction providers it utilises.

OnlyFans stated in a statement that the policy, which will take effect on Oct. 1, is in response to a request from banks and financial transaction providers to stop using explicit material.

OnlyFans stated that it will tolerate naughty content in accordance with its regulations. It's unclear where the site will draw the line between nudity and sexually explicit content for the time being.

On Thursday, the site did not reply to queries for comment.

Some celebrities, pornographic performers, and models have used OnlyFans to boost their salaries and profiles. As the adult video market has been geographically fragmented and dominated by free video sites, adult entertainers have gravitated to OnlyFans in particular.

OnlyFans claims to have 130 million users and 2 million creators, as well as $5 billion in payments to models and entertainers.

Some adult performers have hailed it as a lifesaver for the profession, especially during the pandemic lockdowns, because it allows them to earn money on their own terms, from the comfort of their own homes.

In a statement, Mike Stabile, spokesman for the Free Speech Coalition, an adult video trade group, stated, "This is terrible for a new generation of adult producers who have used the platform, and others like it, to develop businesses, profit off of their own work, and attain independence."

Religious conservatives have targeted banks, credit card firms, and financial transaction providers, according to Stabile, in an attempt to limit the availability of sexual content online. He described them as "enablers of these anti-porn, anti-LGBTQ, misogynist groups," as part of a "evangelical War on Porn."

The measure, according to California state Senator Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, might jeopardise sex workers who use OnlyFans to stay off the streets.

"Forcing sex work off of the internet doesn’t make it go away," he said. "But it does make it less safe, as sex workers have no choice but to work on the streets, where they face increased risk of violence."
