PM Modi Surprises Climate Summit With 2070 Net-Zero Vow For India

On Monday during the COP26 climate summit, PM Modi made a surprising announcement that by 2070 India will be a nation that will go Carbon Neutral. The target of Modi for India is to balance out the carbon emission, which he said will occur by 2070. The Net Zero takes place when there is a balance between the carbon release and the removal of carbon. The nation will reach the Net Zero through a scientific calculation, and not by any pressures and it has been a well thought out move. This the very first time that India being a third world country has set an aim of “Net – Zero”. During the meeting held in Glasgow the Prime Minister went on to announce the five targets by which the Nation will lead to a global warming free world. India’s contribution for the cumulative emissions, are much lower regarding the emissions done by the richer nations. This announcement had taken a new turn and went on to inject new life into the Summit. Though this goal is two decades behind the rich nations, such as the U.S. and U.K. it is consistent that the scientists say that there is a need to avoid catastrophic global warming. "This was a very significant moment for the summit," said Nicholas Stern, chairman of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics.

This target is now a chance for India to show that it can “deliver on both economic development and climate change." India stands at the top 10, after the U.S. and China, for the emission of Carbon. Even the U.S. and China were looked upon closely for their upcoming plans at the conference. U.S. president Biden, has been hamstrung by the politics at home and didn’t turn up with anything new in the session. On the other hand China’s president Xi Jinping, was not present at the session and didn’t present any new plan, regarding the reduction of the emissions. It is India's expectation that the world's developed nations make $1 trillion available as climate finance as soon as possible," PM Modi said, a figure that's 10 times more than the annual climate finance target set by rich countries. "Justice would demand that those nations that have not kept their climate commitments should be pressured."

According to the reports it is even said that PM Modi along with his fellow mates are working upon the modeling through which India will achieve the target of the Net Zero. But the officials mentioned that they have not set up any goals as there are no such strong financial commitments from the rich nations. The Prime Minister has raised a target by 2030, for the low emission capacity energy, to 500 gigawatts from 450 GW and pledged to produce half the country's electricity using renewable energy. The carbon-di-oxide emissions will also be reduced to 1 billion tons by the end of the decade. To fulfill the country’s goal by 2070, it is required to have a detailed plan of 40 years beforehand. PM Modi also committed to increasing India's 2030 carbon intensity reduction goal - measured as carbon dioxide emissions per unit of gross domestic product - from 35% to 45%. Stern, from the London School of Economics, said the new targets could mean India reaches peak emissions by 2030.
