The Odisha government has proposed Indian para shuttler Pramod Bhagat for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country's highest sports honor after he registered for the Tokyo Paralympics.
Odisha's ministry of sports and youth services (DSYS) has also nominated Deep Grace Ekka, the vice-captain of the Indian women's hockey team, for the Arjuna Award.
"DSYS has recommended the names of #Odia para shuttler @PramodBhagat83 and current @TheHockeyIndia's vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award respectively, for the year 2021," the department tweeted.
In 2019, Bhagat, who is presently ranked first in the SL3 category, received the Arjuna Award. In 2019, he earned 12 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals, along with the World Championship victory.
Bhagat has been golds (2) and a bronze medalist in the Dubai Para-Badminton event earlier this year, and he is still hoping for a medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, where badminton is now being designed to establish.
Ekka, a 27-year-old Indian women's hockey player with 150 caps, is a critical component of the team. She was a member of the Indian team that won silver in the 2018 Asian Games.
