Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh
The Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has announced to waive off loans of Rs 590 crores for 2.85 lakh landless farmers and laborers of the state under the Chief Minister's flagship 'Debt Waiver Scheme'.
The CMO said, "Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has declared a loan waiver of Rs 9,090 crore. The cheques will be given at the state level function on August 20."
The Punjab government has declared loan waiver at a time when assembly elections are due in the state next year and senior party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has political contrasts with CM Amarinder Singh. Sidhu has apparently pointed to leave the party. Recently on Tuesday, he tweeted and said that he is respected even in the opposition. This prompted speculation that he may join Arvind Kejriwal's party.
In a tweet, Sidhu said, "Our opposition AAP has consistently perceived my vision and work for Punjab. Be it before 2017 – sacrilege, drugs, farmers issues, corruption, and power crisis have been looked at by people of Punjab by me or as today. 'Punjab Model' It is clear that they realize who is truly battling for Punjab.
