A hole of about 5 miles (8023m) has just been dug by the scientists below the Pacific ocean. The motive behind this is to study the region’s earthquake history.
The site of the drill is quite close to the epicenter of the Tohukuoki earthquake that had a magnitude of 9.1 Richter scale. The earthquake occurred in 2011, which devastated the city with a huge tsunami and disaster.
Scientists on May 14th took board on the research vessel Kaimei that lowered a giant priston, a long, thin drill core nearly 5 miles (8,023 meters) through the Pacific Ocean. Til the drill finally reached the bottom of the Japan Trench was a wait of two hours and 40 minutes. There, the team extracted a 120-foot-long (37 m) sediment core from the bottom of the sea before slowly hauling the corer up again- a report said.
