Shreyas Iyer to make debut against New Zealand in Kanpur
India's deputized captain Ajinkya Rahane reported on Wednesday that Shreyas Iyer will make his debut playing his first test and that he will play the first match of the two-Test series against New Zealand in Kanpur. Iyer had accepted his spinster Test call-up for the series.
Rahane will be taking up the role of Virat Kohli. Besides Kohli, opener Rohit Sharma has been put out for the entire series, while KL Rahul was ruled out due to his injury.
Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami are also present. The final decision will be drawn up after the combination chosen by head coach Rahul Dravid. The spin cell is well represented by Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja, who are all available for selection.
Mayank Agarwal will probably open the batting alongside Shubman Gill, in absence of both Rohit and Rahul.
Shreyas Iyer has an overwhelming presence of 52.18 in First-class cricket, scoring 4,592 runs in 54 games. However, his last appearance in the test matches happened in February 2019 during the Irani Cup match.
