Supreme Court allows the production of Oxygen at Sterlite Plant in Tamil Nadu.
On Tuesday, Supreme Court pronounces the strong verdict in favor of allowing Vedanta to produce Oxygen at the Sterlite plant in Tamil Nadu. The decision is taken to increase the supply of oxygen as there is a national shortage of oxygen amid the second wave of Coronavirus.
The nation must stand together in this moment,” a Special Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud noted.
“Supreme Court will supplement the work of HCs [High Courts]. The apex court will not remain a mute spectator at the time of a national crisis... We intend to play a complementary role to HCs. HCs have a valuable role to play,” the Special Bench said.
The Supreme Court has specifically said that there should not be any political agenda at the time of crisis. The Tamil Nadu government has held meetings with the stakeholders and has given permission to Vedanta, and will be able to produce 200 metric tonnes of oxygen within 10 days.
Tamil Nadu government opposed the decision of opening Vedanta once again in the state, as it was earlier closed down due to the environmental problems that company was creating while the production of steel.
