Kanwar Yatra in UP
The Supreme Court upheld Suo Motu's ruling on July 14, when the Uttar Pradesh government announced it would reopen the annual Kanwar Yatra over fears of a third wave of the pandemic.
The bench, led by Judge Rohinton F. Nariman, cited media reports that it was adamant even when Uttarakhand stopped him.
The annual pilgrimage is accompanied by a huge influx of pilgrims who camp in Delhi and the northern regions.
The court remarked that: "The citizens of India are completely perplexed. They don’t know what is going on. And all this amid the Prime Minister, when asked about the third wave of Covid striking the nation, saying ‘we cannot compromise even one bit’".
Yatra should start on July 25th. The court sent a notice to the American Center. Uttarakhand asked the court to provide an answer so that he could consider the case by July 16.
