Tamil Nadu is witnessing a political debate on whether or not the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)‘s modern political task is to bifurcate the state. These worries have been caused while the party launched profiles of newly appointed union ministers last week, wherein it had mentioned the party’s outgoing Tamil Nadu leader L Murugan as hailing from Kongu Nadu.
This contradicts the position of all political parties in the country. Even the country's BJP leaders have not taken an official position on this dispute, other than a general statement that if people want a separate Congo-Nada, the government must abide by it.
The western part of Tamil Nadu is colloquially called the Congo Mandalam, which is synonymous with the Congo region. The name comes from the Congolese community that dominates the area. The western belt includes the regions of Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Nilgiris, Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. This area is referred to as Silappathikaram in ancient Tamil texts and is referred to in verses from the Sangam period.
The Congo region is cited as the stronghold of all India by Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a Salem native in the region, and Edappadi Palaniswami, a former Salem minister. BJP, an ally of AIADMK, also has significant support from the trading community in the region.
After the explosion in 1998, when L.K. Advani visited Coimbatore, part of the population sympathized with the BJP. KP veteran Radhakrishnan has twice been elected to parliament here following the attack, but was unable to secure a seat in the 2019 elections. However, in this year's general elections, two of the four BJP MLAs elected by Tamil Nadu were from the region.
Last week, BJP's northern branch in Coimbatore passed a resolution calling for the reorganization of Tamil Nadu into its own Congo Nadu state, but high-level governments have distanced themselves from the issue. It all started on July 7, when Murugan was mentioned in his profile as Tamil Nadu from Congo Naadu. On June 10, local newspapers published unsubstantiated reports that the Narendra Modi government was planning a split in response to the DMK government. Arasu "What does the central government mean".
On the same day, BJP National President Mahila Morcha Vanathi Srinivasan, who is also a Member of Parliament for Coimbatore, cites ancient Tamil texts on social media to support the contention that Congo is a separate geographic area.
