On Monday, the Indian contingent, led by Shikhar Dhawan, boarded the trip to Sri Lanka. The team, which includes newer faces, will begin a three-match ODI series on July 13 and then play as many T20Is as possible. All of the games will take hold at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo.
The team's players had convened in Mumbai before being quarantined for two weeks. The players gathered for a team portrait before departing for Sri Lanka.
On Monday, the BCCI resorted to Twitter to publish a squad photo with the tagline, "All SET!" #TeamIndia #SLvIND #SLvIND #SLvIND #SLvIND #SLvIND #SLvIND.
“...I think it's probably going to be unrealistic to expect us in a short tour like this with three games, or three one-dayers to give everyone an opportunity...and the selectors will be there as well,” Dravid said. “There are a lot of people in this squad who are pushing for places or looking to cement their places in the World Cup coming up, but I think the key goal of everyone in the squad and in the team...is to try and win the series,” he added.
Six uncapped players have been added to the squad: Chetan Sakariya, Varun Chakravarthy, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Krishnappa Gowtham, and Nitish Rana. Dhawan is the team's captain, while pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been selected as his successor. Rahul Dravid, the team's former captain, has been chosen, head coach.
The coach and captain had a virtual news conference prior to departing for Sri Lanka, and the team's younger members will be vying for a spot in the T20 World Cup later for the year, but as for now, capturing the two white-ball series will indeed be the main goal.
