National Defence Academy
The armed forces have opted to induct women into the National Defence Academy, the Centre notified the Supreme Court on Wednesday (NDA).Aishwarya Bhati, standing for the Centre, informed a bench led by Justice S K Kaul that females will be inducted for permanent commission through the NDA after a decision had been made at the highest level of the armed forces and the government.
The ASG requested permission from the Supreme Court to record the details by affidavit, as well as a status quo in this year's exams due to procedure and infrastructure alterations. The Supreme Court noted that it has been nudging the authorities to do it themselves on a regular basis and that it feels they are better equipped to evolve the whole.“The idea is when nothing happens, the court steps in. Let me assure you it’s not a happy situation to step in and we would like the armed services to do it themselves.
They are very respected forces of the country but on gender equality they have to do more and sometimes the resistance does not come out well,” said the bench, which also included Justice M M Sundresh.“I am happy that the heads of armed forces have taken a positive decision. Put on record, we will take up the matter. We are happy with the stand. let us hear the matter next week. Reforms cannot happen in a day.
We are also conscious of that,” it added. The ASG informed the bench that the idea had already sprouted in their heads, but it was still in the seeding stage. After two weeks, the matter is listed. The Supreme Court was considering a plea submitted by advocate Kush Kalra, who was concerned about the exclusion of qualified and willing female candidates from the prestigious NDA merely because of their gender, which he claimed was a breach of their fundamental right to equality.
