The Zydus Cadila vaccine has been given an emergency nod

Zydus Cadila vaccine

On Friday, Zydus Cadila received emergency use authorisation for its ZyCoV-D coronavirus vaccine, making it the first in India to be licenced for children aged 12 to 18.The clearance of the country's second indigenously manufactured vaccine by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) will also aid India's immunisation drive to stem the spread of the deadly virus. An expert panel recommended that Zydus Cadila's three-dose covid-19 vaccine be approved for emergency use on Thursday, paving the road for the DCGI's final clearance.

The vaccine, developed by the Ahmedabad-based pharmaceutical company, is the world's first DNA-based covid-19 vaccination for adults and children aged 12 and up.The manufacturer also tested a two-dose ZyCoV-D vaccine regimen using a 3 mg dose, and found that the vaccine's effectiveness was comparable to the three-dose regimen."We've also asked the firm to submit further data for its vaccine's 2-dose regimen," a government official said, adding that the expert panel is now examining the preliminary data for the 2-dose regimen and is expected to award final approval soon.On July 1,

Zydus Cadila applied to the DCGI for emergency permission for ZyCoV-D.“We are certain that this vaccine would be critical for both India and the rest of the world. Dr. Renu Swarup, secretary, department of biotechnology, ministry of science and technology, and chairperson of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, or BIRAC, said, "This is an important milestone in our Indigenous Vaccine Development Mission and places India on the global map for novel vaccine development."
