Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles
According to news agency PTI, the Government has been implementing obligatory hallmarking of jewels in phases since June 16, and a notification claiming it has been removed is untrue.
“News circulating in certain sections of social media that GOI order regarding Mandatory Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery has been withdrawn is FAKE,” according to an official statement.
According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), “hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles.”
For phase one of gold hallmarking, the Centre has already chosen 256 districts from 28 states and Union Territories (UTs). The BIS further said that the goal of hallmarking is to safeguard customers from being victimised as a result of poor gold or silver purity. It also guarantees that India becomes a worldwide leader in the gold market while also improving India's "export competitiveness."
Gold hallmarking has previously been done on a voluntary basis. However, the Centre said in 2019 that it will be required starting January 15, 2021, and this period was twice delayed until July 15, 2019, after jewellers requested additional time owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Up to Aug of this year, there would be no penalties for non-compliance with hallmarking. In a significant step, the Centre declared in June that jewellers that refuse to follow with the obligatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and antiques will not face any penalties until August.
Customer issues, on the other hand, would be dealt with in accordance with the law, according to the Centre, which added that objections may be made through the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry's BISCARE APP or consumer engagement website.
