Twitter is accused by Rahul Gandhi of being biased
By blocking his account, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Twitter of being biassed and interfering in the country's political process. Gandhi launched a vehement attack on Twitter, claiming that it was depriving his millions of followers of the right to an opinion and that it was an attack on the country's democratic framework.
The former Congress chief questioned if Indians should allow corporations to determine our politics simply because they are indebted to the Indian government.
"It is clearly clear that Twitter is not a neutral or objective medium. It's an unbalanced platform. It's something that pays attention to what the current government says "In a video message shared on social media, he charged.
"By shutting down my Twitter they are interfering in our political process. A company is making its business define our politics. And as a politician I don't like that," he stated.
"This is a direct attack on the country's democratic structure. This is not a smear campaign against Rahul Gandhi. This isn't just about shutting down Rahul Gandhi. I have between 19 and 20 million followers on Twitter. You are denying them the right to express themselves. That's exactly what you're doing, "In his video message, Gandhi remarked.
"As Indians, we must pose the question: are we going to allow companies to define our politics for us just because they are indebted to the Government of India?" he questioned.
"Is that where we're going to end up? Or are we going to forge our own path in politics? That is the real issue at hand "According to the Congressman,
He claimed that this is not only blatantly unjust but that it also violates the concept of Twitter as a neutral platform.
