Narayan Rane, a Union minister, has been arrested for making controversial remarks about slapping Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. For his remarks, four FIRs have been filed against him, including one in Mahad and another in Thane. Rane's lawyers petitioned the Bombay High Court to have the FIRs against him quashed. However, a high court bench refused to hear the appeal today, instructing his lawyers to follow the proper procedure. On Tuesday, Narayan Rane was arrested while attending the BJP's Jan Ashirwad event in the Konkan area. He was then escorted to Ratnagiri's Sangameshwar police station and handed over to Raigad cops. Here is some information on the arrest since today morning.
In light of the law and order situation in the state and in Nashik as a result of Narayan Rane's remarks, Police Commissioner Deepak Pandey ordered a probe into the matter and the Union minister's immediate arrest. As a result, a team commanded by Nashik DCP (crime) Sanjay Barkund and including police inspector Ananda Wagh and other officers was assembled and dispatched to Chiplun in Ratnagiri to apprehend the BJP leader. Meanwhile, Maharashtra BJP President Chandrakant Patil distanced himself from Narayan Rane's comments about slapping CM Uddhav Thackeray for what he claimed was the latter's ignorance of India's independence year. “I am not defending Rane's comments, but I will also not express regret," Patil told a regional news channel.
The Shiv Sena workers were angered by Narayan Rane's remarks on Monday. Following the statement, four FIRs were filed against Narayan Rane. Two FIRs were filed in the Mahad area of Raigad district, one in Pune and one in Nashik. According to sources, Narayan Rane was in Chiplun, Ratnagiri district, on Tuesday, and a Nashik police squad is on its way there to apprehend him.

Narayan Rane had said that "it is shameful that the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray does not know the year of Independence. He had to ask for the count of years during his speech and if I would have been there, I would have given him a slap".A group of Shiv Sena activists threw stones at the BJP headquarters in Nashik and shouted anti-Narayan Rane slogans. On his way to Ratnagiri, MLA Nitesh Rane, son of Narayan Rane, was halted at the toll plaza. Nitesh Rane claims that the cops threatened him with a beating.

Maharashtra NCP president and state minister Jayant Patil has come out in support of Shiv Sena against Narayan Rane. Patil said, "The kind of statement made by Rane shows what kind of colleagues PM Modi has chosen in his team. The kind of reaction seen on the streets is a reaction from people who feel that the statement is an insult to Maharashtra." "I want to ask Fadnavis and Chandrakant Patil whether they support the statement made by Narayan Rane," said Patil.
BJP has distanced itself from Narayan Rane's slap remark. Devendra Fadnavis has said, "Narayan Rane should have shown restraint while speaking about the chief minister. While showing his anger on the topic that CM forgot the Independence year, he could have expressed it in a better way. But this doesn't mean that there should be retaliation in a tit for tat way."Narayan Rane was apprehended for making disparaging statements about CM Uddhav Thackeray. Meanwhile, the police have announced that Union minister Narayan Rane will be arrested for his remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
Narayan Rane has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court challenging the FIRs and requesting an interim order protecting him from detention and coercion. The plea was presented to a division bench of Justices SS Shinde and NJ Jamadar on Tuesday, requesting an urgent hearing. The bench, on the other hand, declined to hear it, stating that mentioning (the petition) was not permitted and instructing the lawyer to follow the proper procedure. Later Narayan Rane was taken to the Sangameshwar police station in Ratnagiri following his detention over remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
