Why Do We Celebrate Hindi Diwas, and What Is The History Behind It?

Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas

The 14th of September is Hindi Diwas. The day is important because it celebrates the Constituent Assembly's adoption of Hindi as an official language in 1949. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, chose the date. The phrase Hindi is a Persian word, and the first poem in the language was penned by Amir Khusro, a famous poet.

In Persian, the word Hindi roughly translates to "land of the Indus River." After Mandarin, Spanish, and English, it is the fourth most commonly spoken language on the planet.Wardha, a day, was first marked in 1953 at the request of the Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti. The purpose of observing the day was to emphasise the value of language. Rajendra Singh's birthday coincides with Hindi Diwas. Among other things, he was an Indian scholar, a Hindi stalwart, a Sanskritist, a Ramayana expert, and a historian. In fact, he played a significant part in making Hindi the national language of India.

During the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan in 1918, Mahatma Gandhi planned to project Hindi as a national language for the first time. Article 343 of the Indian Constitution recognises Hindi as an official language. When he was India's external affairs minister in 1977, Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the first leader in a position of power to address an international audience in Hindi at a global level. In Hindi, he delivered a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

The Rajbhasha Week, which runs from September 14 to September 21, is dedicated to commemorating the day. Different events, like essay writing, debating, and poetry recitation, are held during this time to promote the language. Every year, these events are held at various schools and colleges. Even though such gatherings have evolved substantially since the pandemic, they are still held to commemorate the day. On Hindi Diwas, the Bhasha Samman award was also founded. It is given to those who have made important contributions to the language through literature and other ways.
