World Elephant Day 2021: What can we do to save these "gentle giants"?

World Elephant Day 2021

World Elephant Day 2021

Every year, on August 12th, the world celebrates World Elephant Day. The goal of the day is to raise awareness about elephants' suffering and their importance in our ecosystem.

The campaign was created by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation in Thailand and Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims. Since 2012, Sims has served as the President of the World Elephant Society, which he founded.Along with elephants' struggle, this unique day focuses on raising awareness about the preservation of these "gentle giants," their protection, and concerns such as poaching, captivity mistreatment, and habitat degradation, particularly among Asian and African elephants.

What is the significance of World Elephant Day?

The day was established to raise awareness about the significant risks that elephants face. It's also a day to advocate for positive measures that will aid in their survival. The primary goal of these well-known organisations is for the entire world to embrace this day and its message. As a result, more and more events and conversations about elephant conservation are being held.

World Elephant Day's History
On August 12, 2012, Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand founded World Elephant Day. The day was first celebrated to draw attention to Asian and African elephants' critical condition or need.

A few things we can do to help rescue these "gentle giants" are listed below:
- Oppose trophy hunting: Elephants are shot by hunters and die in excruciating pain and anguish. As a result, their tribes are harmed, resulting in population reduction.

- Donate to reputable organisations: We can donate to organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Elephant Society, Wildlife SOS, and others in a variety of ways. These organisations are working nonstop to save lives. As a result, donations will help them support their operations more effectively and quickly.

- Never purchase ivory products: Elephants are murdered for their ivory, which is used to make tableware, sculptures, jewellery, Chinese traditional remedies, and other items. However, ivory sales are prohibited in many nations but permitted in a few countries.
